Starbucks Goes Gluten Free!
Any coffee establishment spells torture for a person avoiding gluten – those wonderful visual delights and smells of doughnuts, pastries and muffins is enough to make me salivate just thinking about it. Well now the renowned coffee purveyors at Starbucks are testing the waters of a gluten free market with a new product: Valencia Orange Cake, which is completely gluten free. When I saw it on the shelf today, I immediately had to try it for myself and it was worth it!
The size of a cupcake, there are 4 grams of fiber packed into it’s 290 calories. (While that’s not exactly low in calories, it is a good ratio compared to the other baked good available there). The ingredients listed were: whole eggs, valencia orange pulp, almonds, orange peel, gluten free baking powder, rice flour, and orange oil.
Go try one for yourself – maybe we can use our purchasing power to show Starbucks that gluten free products are a worthwhile menu item!
2011 UPDATE: Unfortunately this product was discontinued less than a year after it was introduced….LAME!
